How It Works
Don’t worry about teaching rules or keeping score. Focus on:
- Swinging
- Throwing
- Chasing the ball
- Switching between pitching and hitting
Have the child hold the bat
Take a soft ball and back up to stand a few feet apart in a hallway or open room.
Tell the child they will get 5 hits and ask if they’re ready.
Carefully throw the ball as directly as you can at the bat.
Count down the hits together:
“5 hits left… 4 hits left…” using fingers while counting and encouraging your toddler to replicate the numbers
Keep rounds short and energetic. When the ball hits the bat, cheer and get excited.
Once your child has had 5 tries, hand them the ball and take the bat.
Why It Works
At this age, the value comes from shared attention and repetition.
Kids begin learning:
- rhythm
- timing
- coordination
- counting
- patience
All of this is done without making them feel like they’re being taught.
The turn-taking happens naturally because the game itself depends on cooperation.
